Modern cold-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Carrier are rated to keep producing usable heat deep into an Ontario winter, which is what Simcoe County demands. Pair one with your existing furnace as a hybrid system, or go fully electric where there is no gas at the road. Either way the same equipment cools your home in July, so you are not paying for two machines.
Heat pumps make the most financial sense in this region where there is no natural gas at the road: Craighurst, Oro Station, Moonstone, Ivy, and the rural roads around Cookstown and Beeton are all propane or electric, and that is where the annual saving is measured in thousands rather than hundreds. Elevation matters too. Horseshoe Valley and Moonstone sit in a heavier snowbelt, so the outdoor unit goes on a raised stand with clearance for drifting, not on a slab at grade.
